Municipal Elections in this State are held under the direction and supervision of West Bengal State Election Commission Constituted under the West Bengal State Election Commission Act, 1994. This Act has been enacted in order to enable the State Election Commission to conduct Municipal Elections. The detail procedure for holding such elections have been enumerated in the said act. The salient features are as follows:
Appointment of Officers in the district level in the Municipal Returning Officers.
Procedure for preparation of Electoral Roll / adoption of concerned assembly electoral roll for the purpose of holding municipal elections.
Reservation of seats for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe in proportion to their population in municipal area by rotation.
Reservation of 1/3rd number of Total Population seats for women by rotation.
Qualification and disqualification for being a Councilor of the Urban Local Bodies.
Detail procedure for conduct of election, declaring results and handing disputes related to such elections.
