State Government's vision on
urban development is to provide a better and sustainable
living environment in all the urban centres through
adequate provision of urban infrastructure and services,
not only limited to creation of physical infrastructure
but also provision of health facilities and employment
opportunities.
The emphasis of the state's
urban development policy has been laid to create a
livable, responsive, transparent, dynamic, environmentally balanced
and investment friendly municipal system.
This fast pace of urbanisation in the State has thrown a serious challenge to the urban planners. This has put tremendous pressure in the existing infrastructure and public service as well as causing more and more environmental pollution. On this context, one of the major challenges is to provide basic municipal services and to develop appropriate infrastructures that are often severely deficient in the growing urban centers. Other significant challenges faced by the urban planners include potential conflict between economic growth and environmental sustainability, problems of disparity coupled with poverty and inadequate governance of the agencies responsible for achieving sustainable urbanisation.
To deal with the challenges on the urban front, there is an immediate need for balanced urbanisation, good governance and sustainable development. Priority is to be given to develop an urban environment by concentrating on essential infrastructure, training of appropriate regulation and development of economic linkage. We need to concentrate mainly on four agendas-formulations of appropriate strategy, institutional reforms, professional management and people's participation in developmental conditions.
